Member Meeting Minutes Summary: February 25th Facility Organization and New Systems * **Workshop Organization:** The workshop received a large donation, and help is needed to sort through items, test tools, and perform maintenance. Community contribution for this effort is highly appreciated. * **Wiki Migration:** The Wiki is migrating from `wiki.apps.thelab.ms` (Wiki.js) to `wiki.thelab.ms` (Docker Wiki). The new Wiki is older but more stable. Users can log in with the same email as their other lab account. * **Access Control Board (EPICS Project):** The EPICS team is developing a custom access control board using RS485 communication. This board will support up to 32 endpoints on a single wire pair and various authentication methods (NFC, 125kHz chips, fingerprint readers, phone-based access). Integration with existing badging seems largely ready for deployment. * **Kiosks:** Student-developed kiosks are functional and can display information from various photo sources and up to five RSS feeds. Equipment Updates and Needs * **Trogdor (Laser Cutter):** The laser requires new slats for its bed. The current slats are made from 1-inch MDF, but 3/4-inch MDF might be easier to find. A 4x4 foot sheet is sufficient for two crossways sections. * **X-Tool:** The X-Tool is about 90% functional. It works well for fills in XCS software but lacks a repeatable machine home. * **ShopBot:** The ShopBot needs to be moved, and its electrical needs are being assessed. It may require a 440V converter (estimated cost $3,000-$5,000) unless a new location with 440V is found. Relocation Considerations * **Lease Overlap:** The organization aims to minimize lease overlap to no more than two months, with one month needed for moving. * **Preferred Location:** The preference is to remain in Richardson, ideally within the Innovation Quarter (IQ) area, due to existing city relationships and accessibility for members. * **Space Requirements:** While the current space is over 3,000 sq ft, a slightly smaller, highly functional space is preferred, with the possibility of future expansion. * **Classroom Needs:** A single, larger, and highly functional classroom space is needed, capable of accommodating tools along one wall when not in use for classes. * **Utilities:** Information on electricity, water, and fiber internet costs for potential new spaces is required. * **Amenities:** A roll-up door and sublease options from the landlord are preferred. * **Contacts:** `leadership@thelab.com`, Jordan's phone number, and the new rental contact are relevant. Electronic signatures are preferred. Mechatronics Area and Classes * **Renaming:** The electronics area has been renamed "Mechatronics" to better reflect its scope, including hobby-grade robots and microcontrollers. * **Class Focus:** Emphasis is placed on offering accessible electronics classes, such as "project of the week/month" styles, to help beginners learn fundamental concepts. * **Skill Sharing:** Experienced members are encouraged to share their skills across different areas.
